Hello! My name is Jazmen Marquez and I am a first-year student here at Austin College. As of now I am currently a Psychology major with a minor in Japanese. I am a proud graduate of the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Womens Leadership School Class of 2014 in Dallas,TX and I am the first in my immediate family to go to college. I am an only child but I am a proud and very missed sister to two lovely cats and an energetic puppy. As far as hobbies I am always listening to music, I practice on my skills in photography, and I love to learn new features in technology. My interest in psychology came when I was around 14 years old; I was interested in how the human mind works and I had plans in going into either clinical psychology or become a psychologist. As I got older, I still wanted to major in psychology but I later discover a passion for criminal justice and becoming a criminal psychologist or a homicide detective. I am currently in the works of trying to pursue either of these careers because I like the challenge and critical thinking used to help solve a murder case as well as figure out the reason for the murder. I watch The First 48 and I see how difficult it is for the detectives to figure out a case and that is what makes me excited to try and pursue this career because of the need to find specific details and clues to solve the case. The 3 topics that I am interested in learning in this course is the Cognitive Development, Memory Encoding, and Theories of Intelligence. I want a better understanding of the Cognitive Development because of how different it develops for everyone, especially from infancy all the way to late adulthood. For Memory Encoding I want to be able to get a better understanding on how to memorize and use the information I learn to help me study better for my courses. I never really understood intelligence in people, especially those that are considered geniuses, so learning the Theories of Intelligence will help me understand what is considered to be a genius. The topics that I am not looking forward to are Stress, Treating Mental Illness, and Sleep. I have learned everything that I need to know in order to handle all three topics, making these lessons less enjoyable than what it should be. The one question I would like to answer is how personality ties with psychology. For this semester I hope to get a better understanding in psychology and gather the basic understanding in order to branch out into further psychology courses held in Austin College.
