Week Blog #8: Marijuana

My position on the legalization of Marijuana is soley for medical reasons only. I am not too supportive for Marijuana to be used for recreational purposes because of how people will use it i.e getting high just to get high. I am for Marijuana for medical purposes because of the results and help people got from from it.

Results of Marijuana being used to help ease symptoms of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety are mixed. Some research states that patients using Marijuana for their mental illness does help improve some of their severe symptoms, but there are other research that states that it has made some symptoms even worst. Further research is needed for the use of Marijuana for mentally ill patients because I do believe that using Marijuana can give significant help to someone. According to the New York Times, the use of Cannabis helps elevates symptoms for people dealing with nausea from chemotherapy, symptoms of epilepsy, and pain associated with AIDS.

In contrast to my belief with Marijuana being used for recreational purpose, the New York Times stated that legalizing Marijuana will not lead to an increase in usage. The article suggested that if the Government enforces an age restriction for usage of Marijuana, then an increase of usage is highly unlikely. To bring some convincing to people who are opposed of the idea, using Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco. Researchers state that a “casual use” of Marijuana only causes little to no risk whereas alcohol can turn someone into an alcoholic with regular and excessive use.

People do not agree with the legalization of Marijuana. In contrast to what I believe, some state that it cannot be used for medical use, it increases public cost, drug cartels will thrive, and Marijuana usage will increase. There are different views and different needs for Marijuana, but I do believe that usage of Marijuana can help someone who medically needs help.

I agree with you when you say that marijuana should be used for medical purposes because it helps with mental illness and depression, but I also think it can be used for recreational purposes as well. I think that states that make the use of marijuana illegal do it because they have the idea that marijuana is bad stuck in their heads, but why don’t they think about it the way they think about alcohol? Obama is even trying to make the age in which we can buy alcohol lowered to the age of 18. The fact that it is illegal is another reason as to why a lot of people try to get it. If it were legal, as you said yourself, the amount of marijuana used will not increase, people will just be free to do it openly. I think that states that legalize it know to put an age restriction as well as a restriction of how much they can smoke at the place so that the person will not be incredibly high. Marijuana does not affect people as badly as other things that people do constantly like drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. People don’t get addicted to marijuana, and that’s why i think that it can be used for both medical and recreational purposes.
